Light vs. Sound

Light vs. Sound
Sound travels fast but light travels a whole lot faster. You’ve probably noticed that when you see lightning, you don’t hear thunder until several seconds later. That’s because the light reaches you before the sound.

The speed of sound in air varies depending mainly on temperature (sound also travels faster through liquids and many solids). A jet travelling at about 761 miles per hour is considered to be flying at the “speed of sound”. But this is nothing compared to light. In a vacuum, such as in space, it goes 186,000 miles per second! Scientists don’t think anything in the universe can travel faster than that.
